Richly detailed and masterfully executed oil on canvas after the painting by Carlo Dolci located in the Pitti Palace, Florence. Depicting the martyrdom of Saint Andrew, who was tied to an X-form cross in Patras, Greece. Past Provenance: Eugene S. J. Paulus, Bloomfield Hills, MI; Seville De Manigold Paulus, Bloomfield Hills, MI; Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, MI. Framed under glass, H 56", W 46". Inscription of Eugene S.J. Paulus (previous owner) at the upper edge of the canvas, wrapped around the stretcher. Illegible inscription on the canvas verso, appears to be an Italian name or location and the year 1876. Condition

Original canvas which has detached from the stretcher along the right side. Canvas repairs with associated overpainting at the right shoulder of the center figure with a plumed hat extending to the beam of the cross. Second repair at the cross near the right hand of the figure in a red hat. Scattered small points and lines of inpainting. Overall craquelure. Tack holes, rubbing with pigment loss at the extreme edges where the canvas meets the frame. | Please note all lots show signs of wear commensurate with age and use, and the lack of a statement regarding condition does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from defects or the effects of aging.
