Leaded art glass window inspired by George Frederic Watts' 1862 painting, Sir Galahad. Depicts Sir Galahad in full armor beside his white horse in a lush landscape. Created from leaded and painted art glass panels.

Provenance:

Purchased c. 1990 Great Gatsby's, Atlanta, GA.

Property of an Agora Hills, CA private collector.

Lot Essay:
In 1862, George Frederic Watts unveiled his painting Sir Galahad to tremendous critical and popular acclaim. The knight’s purity, chivalry, honor, loyalty, and sacrifice embodied virtues to which gentlemen of the era aspired. The composition proved so popular that Watts painted several versions over the next decades, among them the 1862 large canvas now in the Harvard Art Museums and the monumental 1897 version presented to Eton College Chapel. In Britain, Sir Galahad quickly inspired stained-glass commissions from leading studios, including Morris & Co., James Powell & Sons (Whitefriars), C. E. Kempe & Co. (Walter Tower), and Clayton & Bell. The image crossed the Atlantic through exhibitions, prints, and engravings, finding fresh popularity in post–Civil War America. By the early 20th century, Sir Galahad had become a favored memorial subject, his quest for the Holy Grail resonating with themes of moral courage, spiritual dedication, and the ultimate sacrifice—qualities often invoked to honor fallen soldiers and beloved sons. American firms such as E. Harry Goodhue of Boston, J. & R. Lamb Studios, and Willet Studios of Philadelphia produced memorial windows on the theme. Tiffany Studios is documented to have accepted at least seven Sir Galahad commissions, a notable example being the Ogden Cryder Memorial Window of 1902 at St. Andrew’s Dune Church, Southampton, New York.Written by: Walker, Joe,

Condition

This window represents one of the finest surviving examples of stained and painted art glass from its period, and one of the few that remains in private hands. It retains its original frame, lead cames, and backing rods. Its exceptional state of preservation is likely due to its careful history of ownership: purchased and removed from its original installation by Great Gatsby’s (who did not identify provenance), subsequently sold at auction, and kept in the sole possession of that purchaser until now. The custom-made shipping crate in which the window arrived at our gallery will be included with the sale at no additional cost to the successful bidder. | Please note all lots show signs of wear commensurate with age and use, and the lack of a statement regarding condition does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from defects or the effects of aging. Unless otherwise stated, all information provided is the opinion of DuMouchelles' specialists. Should you have any specific questions regarding the condition of this lot, please use the “Request Condition Report” or “Ask a Question” buttons or email conditions@dumoart.com.
