Preparing to Start for the Doncaster Gold Cup is one of Herring's most famous compositions and he was known to have painted several versions of this scene which features Lottery, the race winner and one of the most celebrated horses in English racing history. Lottery is depicted with his rider, G. Nelson. The closest horse to the left of Lottery is Longwaist with the horse Cedric in the center, third place Figaro on the right. While this work cannot be attributed to Herring, it is of the period and a faithful rendition of this most famous of Herring's work. Unsigned. Provenance: Collection of James A. Brescoll, Bloomfield Hills, MI.
