Thirteen stripes with thirteen stars in a "Great Star" or "Grand Luminary" pattern.
The 13-star American flag with stars arranged in the "Great Star" or "Grand Luminary" pattern is significant as it represents the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Great Britain during the Revolutionary War. The "Great Star" pattern is one of the many variations of star configurations used on 13-star flags throughout American history, as there was no official star pattern for the national flag until 1912. The 13-star flag became the official flag of the new nation on June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act.
