Signed and dated 1954 upper right. Marie, the son-in-law and student of Émile Bernard, first went to French Indochina as part of his 1917 conscription during World War I. He served there from 1919-1920 where he taught drawing. This work was painted when Maire returned in 1948 to work as an art professor at the École Supérieure d'Architecture until his return to Paris in 1958. While he lived in three cities during his tenure, he was living in Saigon when this work was painted.

Included with this work is a certificate from the artist's son and attorney, André Maire on his letterhead stating that this is indeed the work of his father. Furthermore, the certificate states the title of the work as: "une jeune cochinchinoise (Indochine)". Also included with this work are export papers from Francis Peek Ltd. countersigned by Consul of the United States of America on March 7, 1962 and Consular Record of Fees.
