Beaver skin bicorn hat with gold braiding. Silk lining with leather sweat band. Maker's paper label on the inside from Edward Smith, 139 Ebury St. Includes painted tin storage case bearing a medallion from Edward Smith. The storage case attributes this hat to Maj: J. Mc.C. Steele Coldsm Gds. Julian McCarthy Steele was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1890. He saw action during the second Boer War. He later commanded the 22nd Infantry Brigade during the First World War. He ended his military career commanding the 1st Guards Brigade at Aldershot Garrison from 1920 to 1924.
