In Buddhism, Luóhàns, or Arhats in Sanskrit, are disciples of Shakyamuni Buddha, and range in number from 16-500. Depicting Kalika (Chinese: 迦理迦尊者; Pinyin: Jiālǐjiā Zūnzhě, Sanskrit: Kālika), the Arthat Astride an Elephant (Chinese: 騎象羅漢, Pinyin: Qíxiàng Luóhàn), seventh of the sixteen original disciples, or Arhats, of Buddha. Seated in vajrasana upon recumbent elephant. Having a thick, curly beard, adorned with narrow fillet around his head. The visage is gentle, with facial features finely detailed. Pigment to eyes, lips. Elongated earlobes. Loose, flowing robe, draped over both shoulders. The intricate detailing, especially on the robe and the ornate patterns on the elephant, is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the artist. Having a cup in one hand. Traces of red and gold gilt laquer. Having an engraved visvavajra mark to underside. Sealed.
