Edward Hopper (American, 1882-1967) Conte Crayon On Paper, C. 1943, Jo Hopper Reading (Study For 'Hotel Lobby'), H 12.7'' W 9.5''
| In this study Jo is drawn in a much more detailed and careful manner than in the finished painting. Jo's face is recognizable, and the elegant curve of her leg and her hands are sensitively portrayed. The gracefulness of Jo in the drawing is absent from the finished painting; every superfluous detail has been eliminated in the service of the composition. The painting of the work Hotel Lobby that this drawing is a study for is in the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
