Stained carved wood with patinated metal handles and mountings. Glass viewing portal on the lid with a swivel wooden cover. Coffin is lined with linen and contains a paper mache skeletal bust, straw and a newspaper that is dated 1879. Possibly originally a salesman's sample coffin. Provenance: Purchased in the 1990s from a sale at the Fraternal Organization of Masons Lodge in Vanderbilt, MI, where it was once used in rituals and plays.
