3/4 Length portrait depicting a fully armored King Charles II in exile. Tied to his left arm is a red sash signifying the King's intent to return from exile in France to regain his throne. The left hand rests on a rapier and the right hand holds a baton. Around his neck he is wearing the Badge of the Order of the Garter (Both collar and George were taken by James II into exile in France in 1648).  In the lower right background is a city skyline with two riders on horseback. Below the right arm is a plumed helmet. Frame size 54" x 44". Provenance: Property from a Westerville, Ohio private collection. Formerly from the collection of Lawrence P. Fisher (1852-1921) of Fisher Body in Detroit, Michigan.

Condition

Canvas has been trimmed and relined over what could be the original stretcher. Frame appears to be later, possibly early 19th c. Retains early, if not original, varnish. Two holes lower left, one patch upper left, see additional photos. Overall varnish fluoresces under UV light with no indication of restoration. Likely relined in the late 18th/ early 19th century due to the original canvas deteriorating at the stretcher.   | Please note all lots show signs of wear commensurate with age and use, and the lack of a statement regarding condition does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from defects or the effects of aging.
