Signed and dated in the upper right. Portrait of a smiling young woman in a red head scarf. Framed under glass in giltwood frame, H 19.25", W 16.5". Remnants of the original paper backing bear an inscription that has been mostly lost, but was transcribed to have read "I purchased this painting in September 1929 at an auctionshop on Gerren Street, Leningrad, USSR. It was brought home on October 19th 1929. Was hung under the kind auspices of Mr. Hugh Stuart Campbell CSB, Wilmette. It was hung in our home 55 Indian Hill Road on December 10th, 1929. H.J. Freyn". H.J. Freyn, president of the Freyn Engineering Company of Chicago. This was one of a few companies that worked in the U.S.S.R. in the late 1920s advising in the construction of steel mills. Condition

A few light strokes of overpainting to the left and right of the sitter's head.
