The foreground depicts Orpheus playing his lyre to animals provoked by the maenades. The background shows a hunting scene with a stag surrounded by mounted huntsmen and others on foot. Provenance Note: The Vigo Art Galleries were established in London. The business was set up in 1919 and specializes in the acquisition and sale of fine carpets and tapestries. The position of the business was further enhanced when in 1968 the Galleries went into partnership with Victor and Charles Sternberg. Condition

This tapestry is linen lined on the reverse. Colors balanced and evenly faded overall. Some oxidization to browns, commensurate with age. Some reweaving, minor restored tears (primarily along the edges). Expertly restored throughout. Highly attractive tapestry.
