Single leaf inscribed and signed by Washington, billing Richard Smith for a survey of land granted to him for his service in the French and Indian War. Leaf 4 1/4" x 7 1/2", frame 13" x 15".
Letter reads:
"Mr. Nathaniel Barrett - on account of his claim to land under the Proclamation of 1754 -
This Proposition of the expense of exploring, surveying, patenting, and other incidental charges attending the grant of 200,000 acres of land, under the Proclamation aforesaid; his part - to order of council being 100 acres on the Sundry Creeks, - in a Patent for 28.627 acres -
11 March 1771 - Contra Cr[edit]: By Cash of [illegible]"
Condition
Fragmentary along folds, with light soiling and damp stains. Leaf appears to be missing a small portion of the right side, cutting off numerical figures included in the land grant. Matting showing water stains and is slightly toned in some areas. Leaf has not been examined outside of frame.
