Signed lower left "Lee-Smith". Janet Nessler Gallery label on stretcher verso titles work "Landscape". Hughie Lee-Smith exhibited his works with the Janet Nessler Gallery (formerly Petite Gallery) from 1959-1964. In 1962, Janet Nessler Gallery hosted five concurrent exhibitions of five artists, including Lee-Smith, in which the common theme was landscapes. Based on the title, It is possible that this work was shown in the 1962 exhibition about which Brian O'Doherty of the New York Times wrote: "He invites us to stand back and look over barren foregrounds of sand and water to a remote middle distance where most of the action takes place -". Hughie Lee-Smith had three solo exhibitions at Janet Nessler Gallery: 1960, 1962, and 1964. Exhibited: Janet Nessler Gallery, New York. Provenance: Property of a private Michigan collector who has owned the work since the 1960's.
