Ivan Pavlovich Pokhitonov (Ukrainian, 1850-1923) Oil On Oak Panel, C. 1888, Sur Un Chemin De Campagne, H 6.75'' W 10.25'' | Signed lower right I Pokitonow. Accompanied with Oliver Bertrand of Belart appraisal from February 2015. Frame Measurements H 16" W 19.5". Provenance: Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, circa 1914; Acquired directly from above by Edgar Woodbury Bowen (1886-1935) and Helen Gable Bowen (1887-1940); By descent to Grace Woodbury Bowen Collins (1921-1999) and Arthur Lee Collins, Jr. (1918-2004) circa 1940; By descent to the present owner, Helen Bowen Collins Osterwald of Kalamazoo, Michigan since 2004. Literature: Olivier Bertrand, Ivan Pokhitonov, Catalogue RaisonnÈ, Volume 1, Belart International Editions, Luxembourg, 2015, no. , illustrated p. . The unsurpassed master of miniature landscape painting, Ivan Pokhitonov, was a self-taught artist. A member of both the Imperial Academy of Arts and the Association of Wandering Art Exhibitions or Itinerants, Pokhitonov was considered one of the most talented artists in the former Russian Empire, despite having spent most of his life in France and Belgium. Pokhitonov's creative style was heavily influenced by the plein air painting of the Barbizon School and the Impressionist understanding of light and color. Soon his work was presented in the Paris Salons, conquering the general public and critics alike. It was Pokhitonovís encounter with the Barbizon School as well as with the meticulous work of French Classicist Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891) that encouraged him to adopt a small-scale format and to experiment with panel as a support.
