Kpeliye'e masks were often worn by members of Poro, a Senufo initiation society, as emblems of their status or rank. These masks are distinguished by their oval faces with geometric projections at the sides. The scarification marks on glossy surface of the mask denote its feminine beauty, as kpeliye'e honor deceased Senufo elders. Provenance: Property of a Prominent Grosse Pointe, MI Collector
