Hand written letter from James Kent, jurist, legal commentator, chief justice of the New York supreme court, first professor of law a Columbia College. The letter is written to Edward S. Gould, lauding him for his abridgment of Allison's History of Europe. Letter reads: New York, December 19 1843 Dear Sir, I thank you for your abridgment of Allison's History of Europe. The original work as it successively appeared, was received and read by me with great interest, and I have now read your abridgment, and permit me to say that I think it is admirably executed. The material facts are all preserved and state in strong and perspicuous language. You have displayed very great industry and skill in preserving the substance of so great a history, and given in language of your own. It has given me great pleasure to receive such a work from the son of my excellent friend and a most correct and distinguished jurist; nor am I without the strongest respect and esteem for the learned and excellent uncle to whom you dedicate your work. Your respectfully, James Kent. Matted and framed under glass along with an engraving of Kent.
