Signed and dated in the lower right. The painting was done in the artist's early years exhibiting at the Nottingham Castle Gallery. At the time this was painted he was working in the manner of his uncle and mentor, John Holland Snr 1829-86. It is of Whitby Harbour. Holland was founder member of the Nottingham Society of Artists, moved to Isle of Man shortly after this work and became a celebrated artist there.  Exhibition History:  New Nottingham Castle Gallery, 1881.  From The Nottingham Evening Post, Monday 2nd May 1881:  Whitby Harbour, by Mr. John Holland (No. 9), has quite a Turneresque effect as regards the treatment of the sky and water, and another good example of this artist's powers .  Having a giltwood frame, H 20", W 27".  Provenance: From the Estate of Prominent Collector, Leon Zielinski, Macomb County, MI. DuMouchelle Art Galleries 2-21-1988 lot #2120.

Condition

Tack holes at the extreme edges. Canvas has been re-stretched. No evidence of overpainting or patching.
