Despite their functional form, royal stools are never used for sitting, but rather serve as metaphorical, not literal, seats of rule. The design incorporating female caryatids expresses the Luba conception of the female body as a spiritual receptacle that supports divine kingship. The aesthetic refinement of the female body through elaborate skin ornamentation (this figure wears cuffs on her right wrist and has scarification marks around her abdomen and back) and coiffure (see the geometric band across the top of her head at the front and the cross-like decoration at the back) serves as a metaphor for the civilization and refinement that Luba rulers disseminate within society. Private Collection, Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Provenance: Property from a Bloomfield Township, MI private collection.

Condition

Edge wear and patina commensurate and age and use. One hole in back of figures head, another in the back of the neck just below the coiffure. A deep gouge to the figure's abdomen on the left side, and a large piece of wood missing from the upper left arm. | Please note all lots show signs of wear commensurate with age and use, and the lack of a statement regarding condition does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from defects or the effects of aging.
