Inscribed MARIO KORBEL (on the base) and stamped with the ROMAN BRONZE WORKS N-Y foundry mark (along the base). Night is one of Korbel's most successful and popular compositions. He made several versions of it--a 1920 polychrome, an 8 1/4 inch long bronze sketch modeled in 1921 and at least two casts of a one-half life-size version, also from 1921. There are two life-size marble versions as well, based on the bronze, one of which was purchased by fellow sculptor, Anna Hyatt Huntington for Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. (Janis Conner and Joel Rosenkranz, Rediscoveries in American Sculpture: Studio Works, 1893-1939, Austin, Texas, 1989, p. 98) Provenance: Property of a Traverse City, MI private collector.
