Signed lower right: Mary C. Perry after Bischoff". This rare and early work represents one of Perry's earliest documented watercolors and was likely painted while she was enrolled in Franz Albert Bischoff's  School of Ceramic Art. Bischoff (1864–1929), known as the “King of the Rose Painters", worked as a porcelain decorator, formulated and manufactured his own ceramic glazes, He opened his school in 1890, where Perry was a student. In addition to ceramic arts, Bischoff taught watercolor and china decorating. His influence on Perry and her decision to work with the Revelation Kiln Company (and subsequently found Pewabic Pottery), cannot be ignored.

Lot Essay:
This rare and early watercolor ranks among the earliest documented works by Mary Chase Perry in the medium. It was almost certainly executed while she was a student of Franz Albert Bischoff at his School of Ceramic Art in Detroit. Bischoff (1864–1929), celebrated in his day as the “King of the Rose Painters,” was a Viennese-trained porcelain decorator who formulated and manufactured his own ceramic colors and glazes. After settling in the Detroit area around 1890, he established a successful teaching practice, offering instruction in both china painting and watercolor. Perry studied with him during this formative period, absorbing the precise floral observation and refined color handling that characterized his work. This work reflects that early training. That she signed this work "after Bischoff" affirms his impact on her oeuvre at that time. While Bischoff’s instruction provided an important foundation in decorative technique, Perry’s subsequent path—her association with Horace J. Caulkins and the Revelation Kiln Company beginning in the mid-1890s, her association with Charles Lang Freer and her co-founding of Pewabic Pottery in 1903—was shaped by broader influences within the American Arts and Crafts movement. b. Pick-ups At Our Gallery.  If you pick-up your purchases, please contact us in advance to schedule your pick-up. If you are picking up a large quantity and/or bulky or heavy pieces, please bring assistance and your own packing materials to pack and load your vehicle. You agree that any packing and handling of purchased lots by DuMouchelles employees are undertaken solely as a courtesy for the convenience of the buyer, and DuMouchelles is not responsible for damage or breakage which may occur during packing and handling and shipping by DuMouchelles or of other carriers or packers of purchased lots, whether or not recommended by DuMouchelles.   Packing and handling of purchased lots is at the entire risk of the buyer.  In the case of fragile items, DuMouchelles in their sole discretion may decline to pack the items.

 

c. Acceptance and Insurance.  Shipments must be to valid addresses and items will not be shipped to P.O. boxes.  All shipments require that the recipient (or a responsible adult at the residence) be present to sign for purchases shipped. We recommend and may require that you insure all items while in transit. If you use Arta, insurance coverage through Arta covers the total shipment value and shipping charges paid, excluding duties and taxes paid to customs. Insurance must be booked prior to collection. Arta will prioritize restoration in resolving an insurance claim when possible. Claims must be submitted within seven days of delivery.
