Depicting Guanyin (Chinese: Guanyin, 观音, Tibetan: Chenrezig, སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས, Sanskrit: Avalokiteśvara, अवलोकितेश्वर་) Bodhisattva, depicted with a mala (or rosary), and Wénshū (Chinese: Wénshū, 文殊, Tibetan: 'jam dpel, འཇམ་དཔལ་ Sanskrit: Manjushri , Mañjuśrī or Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta or Mañjughoṣa, मञ्जुश्री or मञ्जुश्रीकुमारभूत) Bodhisattva, depicted with sword in right hand. Avalokitasvara having four petaled lotus leaf mark, Manjushri having a visvavajra (or double vajra) mark impressed on sealed underside. Both seated in padmasana. Both depicted with four arms. Guanyin (also spelled Quanyin or Kuan Yin) has undergone various transformations over time. Initially, in India, where the bodhisattva of compassion Avalokiteśvara originated, this figure was depicted as male. Avalokiteśvara is the Sanskrit name for the bodhisattva, and he was typically represented in male form in early Indian art. When the worship of Avalokiteśvara spread to China, the bodhisattva started to be more frequently depicted as female, and became known as Guanyin. However, male depictions of Guanyin can still be found in early Chinese Buddhist art. Provenance: Property from the Estate of Drs. Richard and Catherine Paskowski, New City, NY
