Signed and dated lower right. In period frame: 45" x 53". Canvas and stretcher appropriate for 1921. Having chalk written auction information on verso referencing a sale on February 2. 1985, lot 107. NOTE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: While there are numerous copies of this work available online, the age of canvas, stretcher, frame, and pigment appear to be 19th c. as opposed to the date purporting the work to have been painted in 1921. The quality of the frame carving and gilding is certainly the work of a master frame maker and, again, is of a construction and style that infers that the frame may have been made prior to 1921. We have been unable to locate a Douglas Joseph in our artist reference materials or online databases. It is possible that the signature and date are spurious and that this was originally an unsigned 19th c. work. Provenance: Collection of Linda Taubman, MI
