Engraving on the back of the grip reads "To Dexter S. Gaster Chief of Police New Orleans La. from Comm Beanham". Dexter Sidney Gaster was an Ohio native and Civil War veteran that achieved the rank of Sergeant. After the war, he lived in New Orleans and joined the police force where he moved up the ranks to become Superintendent of Police. His pistol is a six-shot, double-action, top break Smith & Wesson frontier revolver manufactured in the 1880s. Having a notch rear sight with a front blade sight. The top of the barrel rib is marked "Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass." with patent dates. Having checked hard rubber grips with the Smith & Wesson logo. Butt and cylinder are stamped 5742. Includes soft leather carrying case.
