Signed in the lower left and dated 1929. Matted and framed under glass, H 12.25", W 15.25". Theodore Howard Somervell was a British mountaineer, surgeon, artist and missionary. Somervell's intrepid life took him far and wide. From serving as a surgeon on the Western Front during the First World War, to the heights of Mt. Everest during the 1922 and 1924 expeditions. For the 1924 expedition, he was awarded a gold medal at the Winter VIII Olympiade in Chamonix for achievements in mountaineering and the record heights achieved in the expedition held until 1952. Somervell also worked as a professor and surgeon in India from 1923 to 1949, publishing a book on his experiences titled 'Knife and Life in India'.
