Instrument for intimate occasions used by the Toba Batak people of northern Sumatra. Hand-carved terminal of seated male. Two strings. Case carved of single piece of wood with soundboard (with the form of a heart cut out) and back panel of differing wood. Near identical instrument is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum. Estate of Jack Faxon, Birmingham, MI. Michigan Senator and creator of the Michigan Council for the Arts.
