Angell was the daughter of William Bristol McHugh (Ruth), Captain of the United States Navy and veteran of WWI, WWII and Korea, who was stationed in Tokyo after WWII. She moved to Tokyo with her parents after graduating Stanford in 1946 and studied painting under Tsuguharu Foujita.
