The Saint-Valery church in Varengeville-sur-Mer is seen in the distance. Signed and dated lower left: "W.J. Hennessy 1881". This work was exhibited at the Royal Academy, London exhibition of 1882. Retains original Royal Academy exhibition label on canvas verso. This work is also listed in the "Royal Academy of Arts Annual Exhibition Records" as being Hennessy's sole work in the 1882 exhibition. In period, likely original, Florentine frame. W.J. Hennessy became an Academician to the National Academy in 1863 and lived in New York until 1870 when he moved to London and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1861-1882. Hennessy was also a member of the Royal Institute of British Painters.
