A collection of WW1 era items that belonged to a Ward J. Farwell of Knox County Illinois. Lot includes a hand painted M1917 helmet featuring the French and American flags, a ship and a village with symbols of the 309th Engineers. Farwell's name is written on the inside of the helmet along with A.E.F. (American Expeditionary Force). Lot also includes a barracks cap with an engineers pin, monogrammed in the interior. 10 shoulder patches. 6 dog tags that belonged to Mr. Farwell. 5 military pins. 1 whistle. According to the Knox County Illinois Honor Roll: "Ward J. Farwell. 1st Sergeant, Co. A, 309th Engineers, 84th Div. Son of Mrs. F.A. Farwell; born May 27, 1897, at Lock Haven, Pa. Entered the service Sept. 20, 1917, at Gary Ind; to Camp Taylor, Ky.; made Corporal, Nov. 4, 1917; Sergeant, March 22, 1918; 1st Sergeant, March 23, 1919; transferred to Camp Sherman, Ohio, June 8, 1918; overseas Sept. 9, 1918, to July 11, 1919; 5 days in the trenches; 666 days in the service; discharged July 18, 1919."
