Signed lower right. Depicting festivities on the Night of St. John, a celebration held on the night of June 23-24th. This celebration has its roots in a pre-Christian Slavic celebration of the summer solstice, it was later Christianized by linking the festivities to the eve of the feast of St. John the Baptist. One custom of this celebration is the creation of wreaths from fresh flowers and herbs. Unmarried girls would weave these wreaths, place candles in them, and float them down a river or upon a lake. Boys would try and catch these wreaths as they float on the water. A caught wreath would mean the girl would soon marry the boy. A wreath that would float far away would indicate a delay in marriage. A sinking wreath foretold misfortune or spinsterhood. In this image, two girls are placing their wreaths in a body of water. A group of three boys slyly look on from the woods, waiting for their chance to catch the wreath of their favored girl.    Ink stamp on the canvas verso: Viktoria Malleine canvas by A. Schutzmann. Herrsching am Ammersee location, dating the canvas to the post WW2 factory. Matted and framed under glass.
