Greek mythological scene depicting the love-struck river God Alpheus pursuing the nymph Arethusa. Unsigned. Having a giltwood and gesso frame 54" x 43". Provenance: Southeast Michigan collector. The painting has been in the family since at least the year 1900. It has hung in the current owner's home since it was inherited in the late 1940s. 

Condition

Relined canvas. Canvas repair with overpainting in the upper center. Light touches of overpainting to the woman's hair. Overpainting at the rock to the lower left of the woman. Overall areas of stable craquelure. Chipping and losses to the frame. Please note all lots show signs of wear commensurate with age and use, and the lack of a statement regarding condition does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from defects or the effects of aging.
