Each clad in enamel with portrait vignettes of Jean-Louis de Nogaret de la Valette, 1st duc d'Epernon (1554–1642), and his duchess, Marguerite de Foix-Candale 1568 - 1593). Verso of each having a scene of a tazza being filled by a shell form fountain. Gilt bronze bases and bowls are very heavy and well cast. The Duke of Epernon was a trusted ally of King Henry III. After the assassination of Henry III, he was involved in the assassination of Henry IV and instrumental in the installation of Marie de' Medici, as regent until Louis XIII was old enough to rule.
