GEORGES ROUAULT (FRENCH, 1871-1958), WATERCOLOR & GOUACHE OVER BLACK CHALK ON BUFF PAPER, H 14 7/8", L 20", "PECHEURS SUR LA CALE":Signed lower right, ‘G Rouault’; unframed. With Christie's label (HH 761/1, bar code 01936612), a Museum of Modern Art, New York exhibition label and a Cadogan Tate, London, England removal/storage/shipping label (666 252, 11-29- 01) all on the verso of the accompanying, loose fiber backboard (see photo details). Christie's has been contacted regarding the piece and has indicated that, while the work was brought into Christie’s care, they noted that the work was never offered for sale. Christie's has also indicated that it does not appear in the official catalogue raisonne for Rouault, nor was there was any additional provenance provided for the work to them. Printing of the title on the Museum of Modern Art label is well worn but appears to be, possibly, at least in part, different than the title from Christie's. From a Grand Blanc, MI estate.
Condition
Some edge of the paper losses; some color change and slight staining of the paper noted on the verso along with remnants of conservation and non conservation mounting tape at the top. Rf, 5-2-2017
