Makers mark on underside of left top drawer.  The decorative elements on this cabinet seem to be references to Orpheus' trip to the Underworld.   The oval plaque which serves as the focal point of the cabinet depicts Orpheus with his lyre.  The four carved masks have hollow eye sockets, a feature both indicative of Herter authorship (Howe pp. 111-113) and of the location (that is, Hades).  Provenance: Jed Johnson and Judith Hollander, Inc., New York.  Property of the Collection of Pierre Berge, Pierre Hotel, New York.  Acquired from Sotheby's, New York November 2004, Lot #8.
