HENRY JULES JEAN GEOFFROY (FR.1853-1924), OIL ON CANVAS, 1892, H 13", W 18", 'SCHOOL DAYS':Signed "Geo" lower left and dated 1892. 13" X 18 1/4" is image size only. Debuted at the Salon de Paris in 1874 at the age of 21. At the Salon, he garnered several awards, including a silver medal in 1886. From 1880 he signed his works as GEO. At the Exhibition Universelle in 1900, he won a gold medal. In 1885, in recognition of his patriotism during the Franco-Prussian War, he was inducted into the Légion d'honneur.Geoffroy died in Paris in 1924. From the collection of Michael J. Kearins, who lived in Grosse Pointe Shores and acquired fine paintings circa 1930 - 40. Works have remained in the family through three generations until this time.
Size is canvas only. Jw (As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: c. 2% to 3% spotty overpainting in the shirt of the boy on the right around 2 of his fingers that hold the pen and a spot in the shirt under the chin of the boy who is writing; a 9/16" long linear loss of paint in the hair of the boy who is writing just above his forehead; not lined or patched; period frame with cracks and a few chips.)
