John Steuart Curry (American, 1897-1946) ContÈ Crayon On Paper Laid Down On Paperboard, 1937, "End Run", H 19.25'' W 27.75'' | Signed, dated, and titled in pencil in the lower right. The back of the paperboard is stamped "Reproduction rights to this painting exclusively reserved by the artist John Steuart Curry". According to Laurence Schmeckebier, when this was gifted, Curry explained that the work was inspired by the Notre Dame football team. Provenance: The artist. Gifted to Dr. Laurance Eli Schmeckebier in 1943 upon completion of Schmeckebier's biography of John Steuart Curry: "John Steuart Curry's Pageant of America". By descent to his son, Peter Schmeckebier. Laurence Schmeckebier (1906-1984) was an art historian, educator, administrator and sculptor in Syracuse, New York (Syracuse University) and Cleveland, Ohio (Cleveland Institute of Art). His archives are currently held in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Paper has been trimmed. Buckling to the paper due to dry adhesive. Partial embossed seal in the upper right corner. Two small scuffs in the upper center edge.
