MONUMENTAL ITALIAN CARVED GILTWOOD MIRROR, 19TH C., H 77", W 50", D 3 1/4":The rectangular beveled glass plate surrounded by the various shell and scrolling foliate ornamentation to the marginal plates, within the gadroon-edged frame, crested by a rectangular surmount and having rocaille moldings headed by a colored shield supported by winged griffins with an acanthus leaf finial.

Condition

General marks and rubbed wear to gilding commensurate with age. Shrinkage cracks throughout. Scattered glued repairs to carved elements. Mirror with some losses to silvering. (MK)   There is noticeable wear to the silvering at the top area of the mirror.  One Griffin head and neck have been repaired, the other Griffin has a crack at the neck.  The frame is missing two side edge pieces of trim, each approx. 2" long.  The top acanthus pediment is missing approx.. 2" of a side leaf and the pediment is completely loose from the frame.  At the top left corner of the mirror there are 2 pieces of mirrored glass that are broken off,  the sizes are approx. 1" x 1" and 1" x 2".  At the right corner there is a 1" x 2" piece of the mirrored glass that has broken off.   The right front side of the frame has an approx. 5" x 2" piece of scrollwork ornamentation  missing.   Seven of the decorative scrollwork pieces have been repaired.  There are some missing pieces of scroll work along the top edge of the mirror.  TW 8-11-17
